Chapter 231: Spite V
Lu Zhaoyang suddenly found the whole incident funny. She sighed quietly and said, “Alright, let’s say I did it. What now? Will you punish me according to the family rules?”
Old Mrs Huo’s expression darkened. The younger woman’s calm reply angered her even further.
“What’s with that attitude?” Old Mrs Huo raised her hand as she stepped closer toward Lu Zhaoyang.
Lu Zhaoyang noticed her gestured and promptly took two steps back to avoid the imminent attack.
“Firstly, I was not eating melon seeds. I make my own meals in this house and never stepped outside, so how on earth could I get my hands on melon seeds? Do you think anyone in the house would be so kind to offer me snacks right now? Secondly, I did not break the porcelain vase. This is obviously a case of the guilty blaming the innocent. We will know who broke the vase by checking the fingerprints.”
Lu Zhaoyang spoke without pause with her wiping cloth still in her hand. The servant who accused her paled in fear.
The servant’s reaction did not escape old Mrs Huo. The truth was obvious.
Nevertheless, few people had ever dared to try and avoid being slapped by her. Lu Zhaoyang looked like a weak young lady, but inside she had a stubborn character.
“I don’t need your lengthy explanation. Had I really wanted to punish you, do you think you will still be standing here unharmed?”
Lu Zhaoyang was tired of her current lifestyle. She considered for a moment and then said, “If you really hate me so much and will not tell me anything about Che… uncle, I’ll leave the Huo family residence and stop harassing you.”
“No! You’re not going anywhere! I know that once you left, you will try to find your own way to enter military grounds and see Chen. I will not give you the chance to create more trouble!” Old Mrs Huo spoke to the servants around her, “Keep an eye on her!”
“Yes, madam.”
Xue Yuming headed downstairs the moment she heard that something was wrong. She went to her daughter and asked the latter to apologize without hearing her out first.
“Yang Yang, don’t talk back. Apologize to her!”
“I did nothing wrong here.” Lu Zhaoyang would not allow herself to be pushed around like this. She would compromise if it was appropriate, but she had her limits.
Ever since she came back, old Mrs Huo had vented her anger on her. If old Mrs Huo stayed angry, anything she did would be useless.
Xue Yuming approached her daughter and pulled at her arm. “It doesn’t matter if you did wrong. You shouldn’t talk back to your elders! I’ve taught you to apologize if you make a mistake.”
“Alright, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have been together with Chen back then. Had I known that he is of the Huo family, younger brother to Uncle Huo… Mum…” Lu Zhaoyang turned to look at her mother and smiled. “I would have stopped you from marrying into the Huo family. It’s all my fault. My ignorance had resulted in this grave mistake.”
Xue Yuming started at her daughter. She had never talked back like this before. “Young lady, what are talking about, you…”
Lu Zhaoyang put her wiping cloth down on the table and left the room as everyone stared at her.
Lu Zhaoyang had always hid her true feelings in favour of keeping the peace, so they were all taken aback by her retort.
Xue Yuming did not try to console old Mrs Huo, who looked like she was about to burst in anger, for fear of getting blamed as well.
